You can’t move in the shops without being confronted by an overwhelming array of Easter eggs, but for those on a vegan diet or with food intolerances, finding a tasty chocolate treat that doesn’t break the bank isn’t quite so simple. The good news is that there are more options out there than ever before, so we thought we would try out a few for you. You’re welcome.
BEST OVERALL: Buttermilk Honeycomb Blast Egg and Bar

Buttermilk is a brand which originated in Padstow, Cornwall, and diversified from producing Cornish fudge to manufacturing nougat, chocolates and even peanut brittle, adding lots of dairy-free and vegan products along the way.
The Honeycomb Blast egg offered a very creamy-tasting chocolate which was generously studded with crunchy honeycomb chunks, some of which were quite large. It had a lovely flavour and was smooth in texture. The most problematic point was that it was too thick to break easily, so when I tried cracking it, it exploded in my hands with the pressure. That’s not a big problem, but it encouraged me to keep eating it…
The egg is accompanied by a full-sized Honeycomb Blast bar which is unlikely to last for long once the rather moreish egg has been demolished. It’s that desire to keep nibbling that makes it our pick of vegan easter eggs.
BEST VALUE: Happi Oat Milk Chocolate Egg Bar

Happi creates plant-based, gluten-free chocolate products and claims to use 35% less sugar than other mass-market brands. We tried the Milk Chocolate Egg Bar, which flattens a 140g egg into a solid, egg-shaped bar.
The chocolate had a velvety texture from the gluten-free oat milk and rice syrup and had a pleasing, cocoa-laden flavour. It was a little tricky to snap a piece off, though, as it was very thick and chunky. That’s not a massive issue if you’re planning to eat it all yourself, but sharing it would be more problematic. If you want a little more flavour, it is also available in salted honeycomb flavour and white raspberry flavour.
Wicked Kitchen Benny The Bunny

This was the only supermarket brand we tried — although Tesco doesn’t own Wicked, its products are only available there. Offering an extensive range of vegan products, we were pleasantly surprised by the Easter chocolate.
The hollow bunny is made with thick dark chocolate and isn’t overly sweet. It doesn’t have any additional flavour, but the chocolate is rich and has an almost milky taste, and while it isn’t particularly exciting, it doesn’t suffer for its simplicity. A good, simple and very solid effort that would be perfect for a vegan chocolate lover.
Nomo Cookie Dough Egg and Bunny

Nomo is the vegan arm of Kinnerton Confectionery which has been producing chocolate since 1978, with Nomo becoming the first nut-free brand in the UK in 1999. Since those early days, the company has developed a range which is nut, egg, dairy and gluten-free.
We tried the Nomo Cookie Dough Egg and Bunny and found it to be a nice, creamy chocolate studded with tiny bits of cookie. The pieces were perhaps a bit small for my liking, making it feel a little gritty and with no real distinct cookie flavour — a few larger chunks thrown in would have given it more texture and flavour. The chocolate was a little on the sweet side for me, but that is a personal preference.
NOT RECOMMENDED: Moo Free Bunnycomb Easter Egg and Bunnycomb Mini Bar

Moo Free is a family-run company based in Devon and has been making vegan and vegetarian chocolate since 2010.
We tried the Bunnycomb Easter egg with Bunnycomb mini bar and found it much thinner than any of the others we tested. It was so fragile that the egg had a chunk broken out of it before we had even opened it, which was a real shame. The chocolate had a very powdery taste to it rather than a pleasing, rich flavour. It wasn’t until I re-read the packaging that I realised it was supposed to be “laced with Bunnycomb”, so the lack of flavour was rather disappointing. While it’s cheap — it was the most affordable of the eggs we tried — it was definitely a get-what-you-paid-for product.
