Pickup a Matchbox Model as It Celebrates 70th Anniversary

The Matchbox brand is 70 years old and is celebrating seven decades of die-cast adventures by introducing a line of special limited-edition vehicles — including great pickup trucks.

The range reflects on its legacy and looks to the future, paying tribute to Matchbox’s heritage of inventing detailed and realistic vehicles that have inspired generations of kids while remaining a trusted brand for collectors.

The celebratory line will include special 70th-anniversary die-cast vehicles featured in seven different assortments across the Matchbox range, all honouring the anniversary with special platinum details. These selections combine collector favourites and iconic cars spanning seven decades and regions worldwide.

Pickup fans will notice the Ford F-150 Lightning alongside the HMC Hummer EV in the lineup. There’s even a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon in 6×6 form, alongside some other classic pickup models in the Matchbox range.

Individual 70th-anniversary die-cast vehicles will be rolling into retail throughout the year. The limited-edition line is just the first of many ways Matchbox will celebrate, with more announcements coming in July 2023.

“We are so excited to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Matchbox and the trusted legacy this brand has imprinted on kids and collectors all over the world,” said Roberto Stanichi, global head of vehicles at Mattel. “We look forward to continuing to redefine the die-cast category as we move towards a more sustainable future.”

Conceived in 1953 by English engineer Jack Odell, a vehicle mechanic for the British Army in World War II, Matchbox reinvented the toy vehicle category with a revolutionary scale, affordable price, and mass availability for consumers. Now owned by Mattel, these early values of innovation, quality and realism continue to be upheld by the Matchbox brand 70 years later.

Matchbox 70th Anniversary toys will be available at Tesco, Sainsburys, B&M Bargain, Morrisons, The Entertainer and Toymaster stores, and Mattel’s online store, with prices starting from £2.30 for a single die-cast vehicle.
