The revival of gin and its booming popularity continues, inspiring an explosion of new distilleries over the last decade, with innovative flavour combinations from traditional botanicals to sweet baked apple pie.
While competition in the distilling space continues to grow – HMRC reported an increase of 22% from 2018 to 2019 – Masons of Yorkshire is winning international awards that set it apart from its competition.
Scooping one of only eight Gold Awards presented at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2019, against rivals from 90 countries worldwide, demonstrates the quality of the product, something founders Karl and Cathy Mason are proud of.
Wanting to produce a quality gin in their home county of Yorkshire, the couple set up Masons of Yorkshire in 2013. Alongside the traditional Original Dry Gin, the range of flavours currently being offered includes raspberry, orange and lime leaf, English lavender, pear and pink peppercorn and the rather intriguing tea edition.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, it seemed fitting to try the Pear & Pink Peppercorn variety, a gold award winner at the 2019 World Gin Awards.
A slightly sweet, fruity initial taste as the pear comes to the fore starts the flavour journey, followed by a well-balanced hit of botanicals, juniper and warming pepper. This lingers delightfully in the mouth, creating a drink that’s smooth and, somehow, cosy.
Masons has created a couple of cocktails for us, featuring the Pear & Pink Peppercorn expression, so that you can celebrate Valentine’s Day safely at home.

As well as producing a gin range, Masons offer visitor experiences. The Distillery Experience focuses on the creation of the spirits, with guided tastings and lessons in mixology, while the Dining Experience offers themed dining accompanied by gin and cocktails, all while surrounded by the stills in the state-of-the-art distillery.
Sadly, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, Masons can’t welcome visitors, but you can buy a voucher for a visit, ready to redeem at a later date.
