Still pining after the halcyon days of the 1980s and 1990s, when petrol was 45p a litre and fashion was best forgotten? If you liked the cars of the era, decked out with super-wide wheel arches and car phones the size of a case of wine, then next weekend’s RADwood show might be a day out worth planning for.
RADwood celebrates the cars you craved in the ’80s and ’90s that you can now afford to buy, alongside lifestyle culture, blending period-correct dress with automotive awesomeness to celebrate cars, trucks, and bikes from 1980-1999.
Founded in the US by podcasters Art Cervantes and Warren Madsen, automotive culture behemoths Hagerty took stewardship of RADwood in March 2022 to build on the company’s purpose to save driving and car culture, and now it’s bringing it to the UK.
Taking place at Bicester Heritage on 20 August, the RADwood show will highlight what was acceptable in the 80s and 90s, when automotive culture included wide-arched bodykits, bolt-on accessories, tuning by Reiger and Koenig, wired mobile phones and layers of aftermarket audio.
The era of Miami Vice and Max Power – each at separate ends of the cultural spectrum – often has the cars as the stars of TV and film. Hagerty has amassed some of the finest TV and film cars for the RADwood show, including the famous A-Team van (a GMC Vandura) with its red stripe, turbine wheels and raked stance, alongside a Back to the Future DeLorean, the Devon Industries Pontiac Firebird KITT and the Ghostbusters mobile Ecto-1.
The period experience will be accompanied by suitable music of the generation, provided by Absolute Radio 90s DJ Andy Bush, and everything from breakdancing to BMX displays.
