Put a Hvammsvik Hot Spring in Your Step

If you’re looking for something to soothe away the winter blues, Hvammsvik Hot Springs might be just what the doctor ordered. First opened in 2022, Hvammsvik Hot Springs is Iceland’s newest geothermal spa, offering a wellness experience to relax, refresh and rejuvenate visitors.

Located just 45 minutes from the capital city of Reykjavik, the hot springs are set within the 1,200-acre Hvammsvik Nature Reserve, situated on the edge of Hvalfjörður, or ‘Whale Fjord’, with stunning views of the Icelandic wilderness. Day passes to the hot springs start at £42 per person, where eight different-sized hot springs are carved into the landscape across different levels, all of which are filled by a geothermal well and topped up by the tides of the Atlantic Ocean.

As well as submerging yourself in the hot springs and the ocean, there are plenty of other water-based activities, from steam baths to paddle boarding. Alternatively, you can take part in the regular Wim Hof breathwork sessions — a breathing technique that teaches you to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings and is said to help with mental focus, anxiety and pain management.

Hvalfjörður is also a great starting point for those who want to get out into the Icelandic countryside. Take a five-mile hike to the breathtaking Glymur waterfall, one of the most popular attractions in the Whale fjord; at 190 metres tall, it’s the second tallest waterfall in Iceland. The path to reach Glymur crosses the Botnsá River and through winding paths with beautiful panoramic views of the landscape.

Guests can also enjoy the onsite Bistro & Bar, Stormur, renowned locally for its delicious seafood soup and algae shots. If the beauty and solitude of Hvammsvik Nature Reserve is something you’d like to experience for a little longer, four private houses are available to rent. From the Lake House, with two bedrooms which can accommodate up to four people, to the three-bedroom Farm House, which can amply accommodate nine people, you can relax in the company of friends or opt for a romantic getaway just in time for those Valentine’s celebrations.
