Christmas Dinner Delivered to Your Door

Organising Christmas dinner is tricky at the best of times, with time at a premium and modern life demanding attention is spread thin, so having the entire meal delivered could save the day. If you’re looking to run a slick operation on the big day this year, then 44 Foods has a solution for you that we’ve put to the test.

What Is 44 Foods?

44 Foods aims to bring you quality foods from its network of British producers at a fair price for both the producers and you. Everything it supplies is organically produced and packaged as minimally as possible in recyclable packaging.

It promises that it insists on high-quality produce, working with producers who meet the high standards that it sets out with fairness, honesty and transparency.

What’s in the Box?

We had a pre-Christmas dry run with the Christmas stuffed turkey breast dinner, and we were delighted with the results.

The beauty of the 44 Foods set-up is that you can place your order with them and select when you’d like to receive your delivery so that you can plan ahead a little. When your delivery arrives, it’s well packaged with ice packs and insulation to ensure it remains chilled and in great condition. All the packaging, including the ice packs, is also recyclable, so nothing is wasted.

The bundle we tried out was for six people and contained a 1.5kg stuffed turkey breast, eight pigs in blankets, 2kg of potatoes, 500g of parsnips, 300g of Chantenay carrots, 300g of Brussels sprouts, 250g of purple sprouting broccoli and a 170g jar of duck fat.

Our pack came in at £50, but the Christmas range runs from just £12 for a British veg box, rising to £95 for a Christmas Turkey Dinner for Six pack.

Christmas Dinner Delivered

There was plenty of turkey and veg for a fabulous meal, and a few leftovers for supper too. The duck fat produced some wonderfully crisp roast potatoes too, which are always a hit in our house. The quality of the produce was excellent, and the turkey was succulent and juicy, with just enough well-seasoned stuffing to give it a lovely flavour without being overwhelming. If you’re a stuffing fan, you might want to make a bit more as a side dish, though.

Our only real complaint was the number of pigs in blankets that were included. For a box designed for six people, eight is a somewhat random number and seems a rather harsh way to let your family members know who the favourites are — as the chef, I clearly had two. If 44 Foods lifted that number to a dozen, at least everyone would have two, even if that’s really still not enough!

It would also be nice to have a timings card, so you know when to place any items in the oven. Working backwards from serving time and trying to calculate when everything should start cooking isn’t every cook’s strong point.

It isn’t an all-in scenario either, so you’ll still need to make sure that you have the gravy and cranberry sauce in the cupboard to add those finishing touches, but it’ll certainly get you most of the way there without having to slog your way around the supermarket.

Those issues are minor, though, and don’t detract from what is an excellent package at reasonable value for money. What you get is superb quality produce delivered to your door with minimal fuss — it sounds like a recipe for success to me.
