Havana Club has released a limited edition Cuban rum, Havana Club Don Navarro, to honour one of its most renowned maestros, the late Jose Pablo Navarro Campa. Navarro spent 50 years devoted to creating magnificent rums, so this expression, limited to just 1,000 bottles worldwide, is the perfect tribute to him.
Navarro, often described as the father of Cuban rum, pushed the boundaries of rum making, and was responsible for the production of Havana Club 7 during the 1970s, which used continuous ageing techniques. In 2000, Jose Pablo Navarro Campa was given the title ‘primer maestro del Ron Cubano’, or first master of Cuban rum, in honour of his dedication to rum making.
This new, extraordinary offering uses a collection of aged rums from the cellars of Havana Club
, blended with the base of Centenario, created over 40 years ago by Navarro himself.
The result is a deep amber-coloured rum that is smooth and elegant, with a rich flavour profile. On the nose, you’re greeted by dried fruits and the sweetness of honey, with just a hint of bitterness nipping at the edges. Once on the palate, the flavours develop with plenty of nutty spiciness and notes of chocolate and coffee. The finish is long with spices and sweetness, which mellow beautifully.
Navarro is quoted as having said that “rum is not born from a magical combination. It is a cultural heritage that is transmitted from maestro to maestro, from heart to heart, from Cuban to Cuban”‘ – he would undoubtedly be proud of this new expression and the maestros following in his footsteps.
