Lakedown Brewing Co: Beer For Our Generation

Lakedown Brewing Co is an independent, family-run microbrewery, based in rural East Sussex. It’s the brainchild of Jamie Daltrey, along with his brothers-in-law, Christopher Rule and Des Murphy. It was created with the aim of producing both traditional and more modern beer, which can be enjoyed in the Taproom on-site, or in the comfort of your own home.

If you think the name Daltrey sounds familiar, it is. Lakedown started life as a retreat from the manic rock and roll lifestyle of the 1980s, designed by Roger Daltrey of The Who. Run as a farm and fishing lakes for many years, Lakedown is now branching out into the brewing world. Using quality ingredients, Lakedown Brewing Co is creating fresh, easy-drinking beer, which is all vegan friendly, and many are also gluten-free.

If you’re an artisan beer fan, Lakedown Brewing Co has also launched a monthly subscription service. Simply choose a 3, 6 or 12-month subscription, and you’ll receive 12 fresh beers each month, hand-picked from the featured and seasonal ranges.

Alternatively, if you’re in East Sussex, you can visit the Taproom and enjoy the fruits of Lakedown Brewing Co’s labours against the beautiful backdrop of Lakedown Farm.

We tried out three different brews, Pilsner, Pale Ale and NEIPA, and here’s what we thought:

Pilsner

This is a classic Pilsner, made with Saaz hops – a classic flavour for Pilsners with distinctive warm and herbal notes, German malts and Bavarian lager yeast. Slow fermentation to give a crisp finish and a 5% ABV.

Pale Ale

American style pale ale, made with Cascade, Chinook and Citra hops. At 4.2% ABV, it’s made to be an easy to sip beer. Cascade hops, first created in the 1950s in the US, gives a hint of spicy citrus, Chinook hops add in a touch of pine, and Citra hops round out the flavour, with delicate tropical notes creeping in too.

NEIPA

The New England IPA – made with Citra, Mosaic and Centennial hops, to create a punchy, fruity flavour. Much of the fruit flavours come from the Mosaic hops, which infuse the beer with a tropical fruit edge of mango and stone fruits. Citrus and herbs from the Citra hops add warmth and Centennial hops overlay a floral tone to this 5.3% ABV beer.
